This is number twenty four in the Master Networker series. If you happened to miss the first twenty three publications, you can retrieve them at: http://masternetworker.com/mailfiles/mailfile.html or you can retrieve them by email from the auto-responder: MasterNetworker-Issue#@masternetworker.com Substitute the desired issue number in place of the "#" Example: mailto:MasterNetworker-Issue23@masternetworker.com *********************************************************************** This week I am going to share with you some points made by Rick Pitino in his new book, Success is a Choice. Since I live in Kentucky and since Kentucky was runner-up to Arizona in the NCAA basketball championship, I figured it was appropriate to coordinate Success, as Rick Pitino sees it, with building a business. I know, it would have been much more appropriate had Kentucky won, but at least I can say the "Wildcats" won the NCAA in 1997. I must admit I get as excited with basketball as I do with building a business. You know, there are very similarities especially the highs and lows that one experiences in both arenas, but time after time persistance wins out. For those of you who are not into college basketball, Rick Pitino is the "dynamic" (I guess I am allowed to say that since I am writing this) basketball coach at the University of Kentucky. *********************************************************************** This is a reminder that the Master Networker series is purposely set up for the beginning networker or for those considering networking or even for networkers who have yet to be successful in networking. This means that The Master Networker series covers basic networking principles with the purpose of developing a firm foundation for networking. "The Master Networker" will be void of information that will thrust you to a $90,000 income within 90 days or a $15,000 monthly income without doing any work. Why? Because that isn't how networking works. I've been in networking for twelve years, and I have yet to meet anyone who has obtained networking riches without working for it . . .especially $90,000 in ninety days. This series is about the real world of networking. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ********************************************************************** T H E A R T O F B U I L D I N G A B U S I N E S S ===> P E R S I S T E N C E K E E P S U S G R E A T <=== The name of this article "Persistence Keeps Us Great,"  was an article found in USA Week-end a couple weeks ago.  Rick Pitino, University of Kentucky basketball coach says in his new book, "Success Is A Choice" that he owes his success to basic principles that apply to all endeavors.  In this article, called, "Persistence keeps us great!", he explains his 10 steps to success which I have summarized here. First:  THRIVE ON PRESSURE.  Stress robs us of our focus and inhibits our performance.  Pressure is negative only when we are ill-prepared.  In fact, pressure can bring out extraordinary accomplishments. Second:  ESTABLISH GOOD HABITS.  A bad habit is any habit that doesn't serve you in a positive way.  Bad habits include distractions and excuses.  Get organized.  Don't put things off.  do the unpleasant things early, freeing yourself for what you enjoy. Third:  MASTER THE ART OF COMMUNICATION.  In four words:  listen more, talk less! Fourth:  BUILD SELF ESTEEM.  You have to feel good about yourself to succeed.  The way to do that is to deserve success to establish a great work ethic and discipline inherent in that.  But you also need to build the self-esteem of the people around you.  Everyone wants to believe that he or she has value, an important lesson if you are a parent, teacher, boss or coach. Fifth:  ALWAYS BE POSITIVE.  The rule is simple:  the more trying the times, the more positive you have to be.  Look at change as a chance to be more successful. Sixth:  LEARN FROM ADVERSITY.  At one time or another, we all encounter adversity that threatens our will to go on.  One kind of adversity occurs when you experience a major failure, the kind that leaves you doubting yourself.  Then you have to step back, examine your role in the failure and accept your share of the blame.  Another kind of adversity comes from events we can't control, personal tragedies and the like.  Then we either learn to overcome or we sink into despair.  We must force ourselves to appreciate the good that is still around us;  otherwise the bad will ruin our lives. Seventh:  LEARN FROM ROLE MODELS.  The keys:  emulate traits you admire and learn from others' mistakes. Eighth:  BE FEROCIOUSLY PERSISTENT.  Persistence, more than anything else, keeps us great.  Anyone can be great for a day, a week, a month, but the people who ultimately succeed are the ones who understand that success is a long term commitment.  You have to pay your dues.  Develop a "PHD" attitude:  poor, hungry and driven, the kind of attitude that will drive you to learn more and be better. Ninth:  SET DEMANDING GOALS.  Most people, when presented with the fact that it takes hard work to be successful, will begin working harder.  The difficult part is getting them to understand their weaknesses so they can frame their goals around fixing them.  We all make excuses for our weaknesses, but if we don't conquer them one by one, they'll consume our time and energy and make us miss opportunities.  We need goals that will help us overcome our weaknesses.  We just need to put in the time and discipline. Tenth:  SURVIVE SUCCESS.  Today's success is often tomorrow's failure.  A failure to maintain discipline causes it to evaporate immediately.  It's that fragile, so never forget what you did right.  Write down your own secrets to success.  Study them.  If nothing else, they'll remind you it wasn't good fortune that caused your success, but an entire lifestyle of achievement. Now for those of you who are wanting to build a business . . . specifically a networking business, just put the words "the art of building a networking business requires" in front of each of the ten points mentioned above.  I can guarantee you what separates those of us who have been in networking for years from those who are in a very short time is PERSISTENCE!  That means continuing even when you feel you have failed . . .continuing even when you are emotionally down . . .continuing even when you don't want to.  Think of failure . . . not as "failure," but as another learning experience that simply did not work.  I believe it was Jim Valvano, the late basketball coach of North Carolina State who said "don't ever ever give up." ************************************************************************ FREE subscription to the Master Networker weekly "Art of Building A Business" series.
